Fender’s Custom Shop featured a replica at#NAMM2017 of Robbie Robertson’s famous bronze-coated ’50s Stratocaster, which he played at The Band’s Last Waltz concert. The Custom Shop’s Justin Stewart shows off the guitar, explaining that both the replica and the original weigh about 15 pounds — which induces shoulder strain just hearing about it. Interestingly, the wood grain subtly shows through the bronze, creating a beautiful effect. And the rear two pickups are not a single humbucker, but two single coils placed alongside each other.

Effects mastermind Mike Beigel was one of the founders of the legendary Musitronics and now heads Mu-FX. At #NAMM2017 he had a prototype of his new Phasor 2X along with the official unveiling of his Micro-Tron III — a miniaturized, 9-volt version of the near-mythical 1970s Mu-Tron III.

Rickenbacker didn’t have anything new at#NAMM2017, explains Brendan Duff of Ric, because they’ve got so many backed-up orders for all of their classic models! The company’s display was chock full of those classics, including this glorious lineup of 360-12 and 360 models.
One of the crown jewels at Rickenbacker’s booth was this Fireglo Rose-Morris-style Model 1993 12-string.

Mr. Joe Perry was the recipient of the Les Paul Foundation award last night at the 32nd Annual NAMM Show TEC Awards. The evening was MC’d by the hysterical, Sinbad, and Perry was presented the award by Johnny Depp. Afterwards, Perry performed a rocking’ set with his partner-in-crime for over 40 years, Aerosmith’s Brad Whitford, Stone Temple Pilots’ Robert DeLeo, Johnny Depp and Alice Cooper.

One of the other hot tickets at #NAMM2017 was the D’Angelico Guitars’ showcase Friday night featuring Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, who debuted his new signature model acoustic on a set of old Dead tunes — including “Dark Star” and “Jack Straw” — as well as cuts from his new solo album, “Blue Mountain.” Weir was backed by a stellar band, including Matt Sorum of Guns N Roses, Jeff “Skunk” Baxter of the Doobie Brothers, and Gene Cornish of the Rascals. The show was only open to a small VIP crowd of some 150.

Some of the coolest of the cool new items at#NAMM2017 were the Vox mini amps — 50 watts of Nutube power in a 1.1-pound unit! There’s a Rock, Clean, and AC (for AC30) unit, each expected to retail for a mere $199. Plug them into a stage rig as a backup or even as your main amp, or use one of Vox’s new 1×8 or 1×12 mini speakers. The whole amp can fit in a guitar case or even on your pedalboard!
