The Gibson Custom shop is set to launch a Collector’s Choice model based on the 1968 Les Paul Standard made famous by Tom Scholz, guitarist in (and mastermind behind) the rock band Boston. With P-90 and DiMarzio Super Distortion pickups and a top stripped of its gold finish, the guitar is based on one of two in Scholz’s collection. Scholz, a sound engineer, MIT grad, inventor, and holder of more than 30 patents, modified the original, and his tweaks were re-created by Gibson so the guitar represents the one heard on the band’s self-titled debut album, with every curve, output measure, ding and scratch detail added.
